Some argue that the Bible is contradictory concerning whether Adam would die the same day after he ate the fruit. The argument is that Genesis 2:16-17 says that Adam would die the same day, yet Genesis 5:5 says that Adam lived 930 years. However, there is a very simple explanation that eliminates this alleged contradiction.
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” Genesis 2:16-17
Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died. Genesis 5:5
The simple explanation is that Adam did die the day he ate the fruit. He died spiritually, not physically. When Adam ate the fruit, he fell into sin and sin entered into the world, causing him and all of his offspring to become “dead” in sin (Ephesians 2:1) and in need of a savior.
